How often should I change my brake pads?

Most vehicles on the road today use disc brakes for their braking system, though there are still a few that use a drum brake system on the rear axle. Disc brakes use a fluid in the system to create hydraulic pressure. Whenever you press on the brake pedal, the fluid creates pressure in lines and hoses, and a piston in the brake caliper which is mounted to the knuckle that extends around the brake rotor. Mounted to the knuckle are metal plates which have friction material bonded to them. It is this friction material that grabs hold of the rotors. It is important to keep these pads at the proper thickness.

It takes thousands of miles to wear out brake pads. Most brake pads will last at least 20,000 miles or they can last as long as 40,000 or 50,000 miles, depending on climate, amount of driving, pace of driving and so on. Eventually, they will wear down and need to be replaced.

• Ceramic: These pads combine ceramic-like materials like clay and porcelain mixed with copper fibers to create quieter braking, longer lasting design and more resistance to rotor wear and damage.
