Honda has announced the introduction of the Prologue, which is a new battery-electric model set to be on the market by 2024. This model will be the first in a series of the Honda BEV vehicles and part of the vision for the manufacturer to achieve 100 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by the year 2040 in North America.
The Prologue isn’t the only model in the planning stage for 2024. The all-electric Acura SUV will be introduced that same year. Honda has plans to launch another new series of EV vehicles for the second half of the decade.
Honda has a goal to reach carbon neutrality for all products and activities by the year 2050, which includes specific targets for the sale of electric vehicles. To reach this goal, sales should reach 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2035.
Honda has been introducing electric vehicles to the US since 1997 with the EV Plus. The first hybrid from the manufacturer was the Honda Insight in 1999. Next came the Honda FCX in 2002, which was the first fuel cell model to reach individuals. Clarity models were introduced in 2017.
Hybrid-electric systems will be added to core models to reduce CO2 emissions. The manufacturer’s goal is to bridge the hybrid-electric system to the battery-electric model, which is now in the development stages.
Honda has a full line of cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans with the lowest CO2 emissions of any major auto manufacturer in America. This statistic comes from the EPA. Both the Accord and CR-V offer a hybrid model for improved efficiency. The Honda Insight is a full hybrid sedan with all the amenities you could want. Travel further with an estimated 55-mpg rating for city driving. Power for this model comes from a 1.5L Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine and electric motor.
The Clarity sedan offers two alternative fuel options with a plug-in hybrid and fuel cell. A fuel cell model uses hydrogen to fuel the vehicle with instant acceleration and zero emissions. This vehicle offers up to 360 miles of travel before needing to fill up again and stations all around the country.
For the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, you get a combined rating of up to 340 mpg. Travel around town on electric power alone or keep going further down the highway with the gasoline engine. Charge this model in 2.5 hours with a fast charger or in 12 hours with a 120V household outlet. You’ll find EV power stations all across the country for your travels.
